República Checa: Biblioteca Nacional irá digitalizar meio milhão de itens

The Czech National Library (NK) will have half a million books and periodicals from the 16th to 21st centuries digitised within two large projects that have been launched, NK director Tomas Boehm told journalists yesterday.

One of the projects has been supported by the European Union with 255 million crowns, the other will be carried out in cooperation with Google firm, Boehm said.

He said the library will buy special robotic scanners for the purpose within a tender.

The National Digital Library will cost about 300 million crowns. The state budget will cover about 15 percent of the sum.

The project funding is tied by the year 2014, but the digitising of about 300,000 books and magazines, mainly Czech books and periodicals from the 19th and 20th centuries, will continue minimally until 2019.

Bohdana Stoklasova, from NK, said two criteria will be applied in the selection of items for digitising.

"They will be documents that are interesting for the public and those the most physically threatened, printed on acid paper and frequently used by readers," she told CTK.

Another 200,000 works, mainly from the Slavonic collections from the 16th to the 18th centuries, will be digitised in cooperation with Google and the library will pay nothing for it.

The books will be available at google.cz/knihy.

The NK started digitising its collections in the first half of the 1990s. If first digitised the whole catalogue and gradually continued with manuscripts, books and newspapers.
